I usually do not listen to radio, any kind, but yesterday in a car I happened to listen in to an interview, I don’t know what radio it was, featuring Abigail Kubeka, on the place of the arts in the “new” SA. It is amazing to hear she has been in the arts since the 50’s when she was singing with young Mirriam Makeba and the Skylarks. She really is an institution and indeed a power inspiration. When asked if there was any difference in the creative and cultural economy since, she minced no words in her definitive response – none. Abigail is the quintessential example of a life absolutely true to its self, an artist par excellence. I hear people talk about all kinds of heroes and heroines, Soweto would do well to celebrate and memorialize her undying spirit. To boot, I hope an autobiography in her name is also in the cards. Funda Centre would have been the ideal point to campaign for this, the larger narrative of telling our story from an African centred perspective.
